Moana Jr.

Date

November 2024

With Moana Jr. I wanted to push all theatrical bounds and try new things that we had never done before at Evolve. One of my favorite elements in directing is using Architectural Space as a part of the show and to see no limitations, only new opportunities with any given space. There was 15 minutes of the show after intermission where we had the audience stand in a circle in the courtyard where our theatre is located. We had a very intimate and interactive scene between Maui and Moana on a big canoe I had built specifically for this theatre in the round segment of the show under the stars.

My goal for Moana Jr. was to the audience feeling rejuvenated and full of wonder. There is so much nuance and beauty if we open our minds and shift our perspective; we are able to see things differently, allowing us as creatives to PLAY! So much of theatre is play, trying new things and taking risks. But if we think about it, so is life no matter your occupation!

As an audience member I wanted everyone to leave with a different view point of the show, a different experience. This is so that each time they came back to see the show, depending on where they sat, their experience changes! I also encouraged them to speak about their different experiences amongst each other. This caused for some very exciting dialogue with me as the director and between the community.
